Prejudice Is Also A Disease

Hey Shades Readers, if you’re like us, you have been watching the developing story of the spread of the Coronavirus with much uncertainty and trepidation.  The epidemic has taken more lives than the SARS outbreak of 2003 and while there are reports that the number of diagnosed cases are dropping, there is little comfort as there are still so many unknowns.

As a result of the situation, there has been an increase in fear mongering, unfounded rumors and just plain old racism which are all very troubling.

As an example, a local Markham restaurant, Wuhan Noodle 1950, has been the subject of decreased business and racist attacks just by virtue of their name.  Hearteningly, diners have started to head back to the restaurant as a sign of support and solidarity and to prove that the name of the restaurant won’t make you sick.

Some online comments about China and Chinese people have been, in two words, uneducated and disgusting.  We are sickened by how people’s biases and prejudices come out so quickly when faced with difficulty but let’s be clear about something – not all Chinese people are sick or contagious but we are pretty sure all of them are as scared and worried as the rest of us.  So let’s leave them alone and not let the lowest aspects of human nature get the best of us.

There have also been videos and stories spouting tales about remedies and memes and jokes making fun of the situation.  Shades readers, please be careful if you decide to take in any of this content.  We aren’t doctors but we are pretty sure drinking bleach to prevent the virus will kill you faster than it will cure you.  Please check that what you are reading and viewing come from official and qualified sources.

As we all face this situation together, be hyper-vigilant but don’t be cruel.  Be cautious but not racist.  Take the necessary precautions but remember to be kind while you are at it.  We are all in this together, aren’t we?

Have a great and safe week!
