The Power Of Community

Hey Shades Readers, hope everyone is having a lovely day!

Firstly, congrats to the Raps on an amazing Game 1 and we hope you can get to a two-game lead!  Let’s go, Raptors!

A few weeks ago, we discussed the Rogers Give Together weekend which is coming up on June 8 and 9.  Everyone is looking forward to spending time in our communities and the date can’t come soon enough!

Because it’s on our mind, we wanted to take some time to discuss volunteering and community involvement a little more with you.

Although the Greater Toronto Area is full of different neighbourhoods and communities, many would tell you that they really don’t know who their neighbours are.  Many of us live insulated lives which are occupied with work, children, errands and so many other things.  I know that when I drive around my neighbourhood, I don’t really see kids hanging out together or people congregating at different houses, like life used to be.  Back then, people’s networks extended beyond their families – friends and neighbours figured largely into the landscape of support.  I think that many of us in the GTA and in other larger cities would agree with my observation about older times vs today.

It is important that we feel connected to our cities and our communities and this may be where community involvement comes into play.  I have a couple of friends who live in the west end of the city and they speak enthusiastically about their neighbours and the events that occur on their street, especially in the summer, like street yard sales and bbqs – they definitely feel that connection with those around them and their entire family has benefitted from forming those bonds. Have a great week and don’t forget to share us!

So what are some ways we can all get more involved in our communities?  For starters, you can check your local schools or community centres for events that you can hold or participate in.  You can also sponsor a local team or at least attend team events.  You can give back by donating your time at seniors’ facilities or community kitchens.  You can simply reach out to your neighbours and start a conversation.   There is so much we can do to make our neighbourhoods and those around us stronger – don’t waste another second.

Have a great week and don’t forget to share us!
