Everyone You Will Ever Meet Knows Something You Don't!
Happy February, Shades readers! We are excited for this month for a number of reasons! Firstly, we are getting closer to warmer weather (yes, it is a bit of a stretch but we need to have some hope with the crazy weather we’ve been having in Toronto!) and secondly, we are hosting Cocktails & A Movie later on in the month and we really want you to join us! Keep checking our site, Facebook and Insta for details!
We are also excited to explore our theme for this month, which is Networking! Yes, we heard your collective groans since everyone seems to dislike the activity. We are happy to help debunk some of the myths about networking and how it can help you!
So here is the stereotypical concept of networking – you are at an event where everyone is standing around, either looking really uncomfortable or bragging about themselves and you just can’t wait to run for the exit. It is true that networking events can often be like that but we want to encourage you to broaden your concept of networking. At its core, networking is about communicating and connecting with others to help them get to know you and for you to get to know them. By allowing this exchange of information, both parties may be able to benefit in the future.
So we probably all agree that the concept is a good one. If we can agree on that, we are in good shape! We want you to now consider that networking can happen in many different ways. You can meet someone at a party or at the gym and you can network with them. Having an organic and natural conversation with someone can lead to great things when you take the time to get to know them and you allow them to get to know more about you. You can learn so much from others that can help in achieving your goals.
Sometimes, just asking someone to go for a coffee can be a networking opportunity. You may want to do that with someone at work with whom you would like to discuss a potential role or your overall growth and development. You may want to just find out more about their career path. Being upfront and sincere about your intention is always the best course of action.
We at Shades have participated in many networking events and we know the value they bring to both individuals and to organizations and industries. We have also networked at social events as well and we’ve been able to form some great connections with others who we may not have otherwise associated with. So don’t knock it till you’ve tried it! Just make sure that you are being authentic in your interactions and taking in as much as you can from the person and the experience. Don’t underestimate the power of grabbing a coffee!
Do you have any examples of great networking opportunities you’ve had? Please let us know in the comments below.
Have a great week and please share this blog and our site on your social media channels!
